Pilates and Somatics
Beginner / All Level
Pilates is a well known exercise system designed to strengthen the bodies' "core" which refers to our backs, shoulder girdle stabilizers and abdominals. With time, Pilates improves posture, muscle balance and ease and efficiency of motion. It's an exercise system which can decrease chronic aches and pains and provide a strong foundation for participation in all physical activities from dance to yard work.

Somatic education is a movement system designed to bring greater awareness and control to an individual's physiological process. By increasing body awareness through slow, graceful and gentle movements, participants can free themselves of habitual movement habits and postures and attain flexibility and freedom.

Practiced together, Pilates and Somatics are the opposite sides of a balanced coin. In short, Somatic movements reduce habitual movement patterns and chronic stiffness in order for participants to better adapt to the alignment and awareness that Pilates requires. Pilate's/ Somatic class will begin with gentle yet powerful movements from the Somatic system and then move onto the more rigorous strengthening of Pilates. A stretch and relaxation segment concludes class sometimes utilizing Somatic movements and sometimes using classic stretching and breath work. Participants leave refreshed and revived!
